Needs Assessment

We created a “Needs Assessment” in the form of a survey made in Google Docs. We emailed the link, which you can reach by clicking here, to our Technology Committee to get their opinions about our developing initiative. The questions had to do will experience with technology and willingness to accept new technologies into their classrooms, given the right circumstances.

a. Create & administer needs assessment:

• Needs Assessment Survey Questions:
• Do you know of or have heard of a flip camera?
• Have you ever used a video camera (i.e. on cell phone, camera)?
• If you had a flip camera for your class/students, would you use it?
• Can you add flip cameras to any existing lessons you already teach?
• If yes, name one possibility.
• Would you be able to trust your students to bring the flip camera home for an assignment?
• How would you regulate the students taking home the flip cameras?
• Would you be willing to go and be trained how to use a flip camera?
• What is your preference for professional development?
• After training, how often do you see yourself using a flip camera within you class?
• Do you have computer/laptop access in your class?
• If yes, how many?
• How is your access to these computers/laptops handled?

b. Review, analyze, & prioritize needs based on results:

c. Document results & communicate with professional committee:

After reviewing the results of the survey our professional committee took, we were able to see where everyone stood with Flip Cameras. Just about everyone knows of Flip Cameras, have used a camera before, and would and could use Flip cameras in already established lessons in their classroom. Just to note, the two “no” answers were from technology advisors, where the question was not applicable. We do have to notice the concern with trusting the students with the new technology, most of our surveyors said but showed some concern when it came to having the students take the cameras home for projects. To right this concern, we all made a need to as sign out sheet and parent signatures to take over responsibility for lost or broken cameras. All of the above approval of this initiative was under the circumstance of training being provided. After the survey, we noticed that most of our teachers would like two sessions, one hands-on (free time) and the other application and instruction. Some preferred one before the other, so I think we should provide training in both sequences to better fit the needs of the teachers. We are still working out the numbers, as to how many cameras we would like to obtain in order to implement our initiative, but our survey confirmed that everyone has enough access to computers to physically carry out this project.
